Introduction to Local Area Networks is just what the title implies. Starting from square one, it takes you through network hardware and software, network management, and "Intranetworking." The 17 chapters and 2 appendices cover just what a book of this sort should cover.

The writing style is clear and readable, and there's a lot of practical information, well organized. Naturally the book doesn't go into depth about any one topic, but every chapter ends with a very good list of books for further reading. Another handy feature is a list of networking-related Web sites, very conveniently placed on the inside front and back covers. Bravo!
The wealth of information and plethora of pointers to resources for further study make this an excellent choice for a beginning network guru, or anyone who wants to understand a little more about LANs.
